Coaching at Darebin

Darebin United coaches shape the experience of every player and family. We expect coaches to create safe, inclusive and positive learning environments; communicate clearly; plan and deliver age-appropriate sessions; support the club’s football pathway; and work constructively with team managers, parents and technical leaders. The club aims to support coaches through education, mentoring, shared resources and regular alignment. Prospective 2027 coaches should complete the Coach EOI and nominate their preferred age groups and roles. Appointments consider experience, qualifications, availability, values and team needs.

Why coach at Darebin United?

Coaching at Darebin United is an opportunity to make a genuine difference—to a player’s football, confidence and connection to the club.

Our coaches help players enjoy the game, develop strong foundations, understand teamwork and progress through a connected club pathway. We value coaches who put people first while building ambitious, competitive and resilient teams.

Our coaching principles

  • Player-centred: every session should help players learn, improve and enjoy football.
  • Safe and inclusive: players are treated with dignity, respect and fairness.
  • Development-focused: decisions balance individual growth with team performance.
  • Team-first: coaches support the whole club pathway, not only their own team.
  • Clear communication: expectations are explained consistently to players and families.
  • Continuous learning: coaches seek feedback, share ideas and keep developing.

What the coaching role involves

Coaching responsibilities vary by age group and competition, but every Darebin United coach is expected to:

  • Plan and deliver structured, age-appropriate training
  • Prepare players and teams for match day
  • Create a positive environment for learning and competition
  • Manage player participation, development and feedback fairly
  • Work closely with the team manager and club football leaders
  • Communicate promptly with players and families
  • Follow club policies, safeguarding standards and competition rules

How the club supports coaches

Strong player development depends on supported coaches. Darebin United aims to provide:

  • Clear football-program expectations and seasonal priorities
  • Coach induction and role guidance
  • Education opportunities and shared coaching resources
  • Mentoring and support from club football leaders
  • Regular communication and alignment across age groups
  • Practical help with team structures, player development and challenges

Support will reflect the experience of each coach and the needs of their team.

A connected coaching pathway

Our coaching approach connects every stage of the player journey.

Coaches are encouraged to understand what players have learned before their age group and what they need for the next stage.

Working with players and families

Good communication builds trust and helps teams succeed.

Coaches should set expectations early, provide constructive feedback, communicate selection and participation decisions respectfully, and work with the team manager on routine administration. Concerns should be handled calmly and escalated through the appropriate club channel when support is needed.

Players must always be treated consistently with the club’s values, policies and safeguarding standards.

How coaches are appointed

Coaching appointments consider the needs of the whole football program, including team formation, player numbers, age-group requirements and available coaching capability.

The club considers experience, qualifications, reliability, communication, availability, alignment with club values and willingness to participate in coach development.

Submitting an Expression of Interest begins the process but does not guarantee an appointment.
